Chapter 13

JACK WAS ENJOYING THE TOUR of the estate that stretched for miles and miles. After driving for an hour, Elizabeth stopped the car. “Care to see one of our projects?” she asked.

“Sure,” Jack said, hopping out of the car.

She led him up the side of a steep hill. When they got to the top, she pointed. “This hillside and the next two are covered in seedlings. One of the estate’s most lucrative businesses is logging. To sustain it, three seedlings are planted for every log that is taken. In twenty years or so, these trees will soar toward the sky.”

“Are all the seedlings planted by hand?” Jack asked.

“Yes. The estate has an entire crew of loggers and one of their duties is conservation. It’s a lot of hard work, but necessary if we want to leave the estate solvent for future generations.

“There’s also an agriculture school that has endowed scholarships for fifteen students a year. Mostly local students are selected. Cade believes if they learn to love the land, they will stay and make their homes here.”

“Any plans to expand the number of student slots?”

“I’m not sure. You’d have to ask Cade about that.”

Jack nodded. He would make a point to talk to Cade about adding more slots to the schools and expanding the pool of students. The more students there were to understand how taking care of the land was vital not only to the Barrett Estate but to the world as a whole, was a worthwhile goal he wanted to help support.

Watching Elizabeth talk about her ancestral home made him cognizant of how smart she was. She was not just a pretty face, but also someone who understood business and how to get the best outcomes with the tools she had to work with. He loved listening to her; her voice seemed a balm on his overactive mind. He found himself relaxing, truly relaxing, for the first time in a long time. It was all because of her.

“Do you fish? Jack?”

“Sorry. What did you say?”

“I asked if you fished, fly-fishing to be exact? The estate holds an annual fly-fishing event and if you’re interested, I’ll ask Cade to invite you to the next one.”

“Do you attend the event?”

Elizabeth shook her head. “No. I don’t care for fishing.”

“I’ll keep it in mind especially since I’ve never fished before.”

“Really?”

“It’s the truth. My father would take my sister Jade out fishing with him, but I never had a hankering to go with them.”

“Well, then I guess we can scratch off the fly-fishing event for you.”

“Besides,” Jack said pulling her into his arms, “I’d much rather spend my time in England like this.” He brushed his lips against her mouth. Her lips were softer than he could have imagined and when she parted her lips inviting him to taste her, he cupped the back of her neck as he angled her head to deepen the kiss. His tongue swept in and explored her sweetness.

Her arms went around his neck and soon
